A quick overview of Job 14:1-9;13-17.
(14:1-9)
As Job is feeling the crippling weight of his circumstance, he begins to yield to despair. Humanities existence is futile and full of torment(v1). Our glory is in an instant, come and gone(v2). Why, if we are unclean, blemished and full of rot, do you bother with us(v3-4)? Please leave me here, extend a little grace my way and pass over me with your judgment(v6). For a tree has more hope than I ever will…
7 “For there is hope for a tree,
if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,
and that its shoots will not cease.
8 Though its roots grow old in the earth,
and its stump dies in the soil,
9 yet at the scent of water it will bud
and put out branches like a young plant.”
(Job 14:7-9)
What perspective!
Even though this life IS short and we like the tree shall surely be cut down, the roots and stump(our remains), though rotting in the soil shall at the presence of water(the Spirit of God) be renewed and restored.
“13 Oh that you would hide me in Sheol,
that you would conceal me until your wrath be past,
that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14 If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my service I would wait,
till my renewal should come.
15 You would call, and I would answer you;
you would long for the work of your hands.
16 For then you would number my steps;
you would not keep watch over my sin;
17 my transgression would be sealed up in a bag,
and you would cover over my iniquity.”
That you would hide me in the grave, holding me close, preparing my redemption while your wrath ravaged all that stood against you(v13). Surely I hope in eternal life. So much in fact that I shall wait all the remaining days of my life for its presentation(v14). In that moment you will call me, I will respond and our relationship will no longer be severed by the effects of my rebellion(v15-17).
There is always HOPE.
“the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
